George Washington Slept Here (1942) – Producer Jerry Wald’s Presentation Script

The Mr. Fuller Residential Library
A Brief note by Zach Eastman

What follows in the coming pages is a complete look at production and all its ebbs and flows. Everything from the opening title page, to the numerous pink pages, all the way down to a note of censorship. All here, bound together and originally gifted to the legendary Jerry Wald.
It would be one thing if this were just one of the many bound scripts Wald had been gifted at production’s end. What makes this particular tome special is that this is at the beginning of an illustrious career as a film producer. Here bound are the experiences in those early efforts, carefully preserved.
But for Benny fans, this obviously means a chance to read through the ever evolving screenplay for one of Jack’s funniest and fondly remembered films. Based upon the successful stage show, the screenwriter Everett Freeman flipped the roles and made Jack’s Bill Fuller the one hesitant to escape the life of the city, let alone for a dilapidated colonial era house.
In the coming month, there will be a more updated preface that will summarize the findings in this script when compared to the final film. For now though; in the spirit of Jack’s birthday, I hope this gift is a lovely surprise to all who cant wait to gain some further insight into ‘GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE’.
